Culinary Cycle Adventure

“Via Claudia Augusta”

Cycle along old Roman routes and enjoy ancient cuisine

2000 years ago the Roman emperor Claudius had this route from the Adriatic Sea to Augsburg built mainly to supply his troops. In the middle of the 1990’s this Roman road has been revived for people to hike and bike and it’s being used by thousands these days. They use it in a peaceful manner and take the time to relive the Roman culture in Museums, Information Centers and two historical milestones of Roman history. Simultaneous with the revival of the road ancient culinary art came to appearance using fruits and foods of that time. More than 30 cooks between Füssen and Nauders whip up dishes using Roman condiments to take you out on a historical journey. How would you like beef loin Roman style with golden wheat or a filet of wild hare with a barley-mushroom risotto?

Route features

  • Mostly paved cycling paths and countryside roads as well as less traveled back roads and village alley ways;
  • use of the Via Claudia Augusta shuttle transfer to conveniently manage the two challenging mountain passes;
  • also for children from the age of 12 (high amount of cycling enthusiasm required).

Program

Day 1: Individual Arrival at Füssen respectively Landeck

Be a guest at the late mideival town of Füssen or Landeck, the westernmost town in Tyrol.

Day 2: Füssen – Biberwier (approx. 29 km) and excursion Forggensee (approx. 32 km)

For those of you who came to Landeck the day begins with a transfer to Füssen

Before we take the first, short kept, trip to Tyrol you may take a tour to the famous
castle of Neuschwanstein. Alternatively or additional you may bike around the
romantic Forggensee, which is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes of Bavaria
(32 km).

Afterwards you’ll start your bike tour towards Austria and soon pass the border of Germany and Austria. Take a short stop at Reutte, which is where Via Claudia Augusta and the Tyrolean Saltroute crossed its roads and where you’ll get to see the fort of Ehrenberg. Past the towns of Heiterwang, Bichlbach and Lermoos the road continues along “Moos“, which is an idyllic and protected swamp. At the destination Biberwier, a small and historic town, you get to eat an opulent three course meal as a vesperna, which is what it was named in the ancient world.

Day 3: Biberwier – Landeck (approx. 58 km)

To save some energy for the coming day we will take the shuttle bus over pass Fern (1212m). From Nassereith we will cycle through the scenic Gurgltal heading towards Imst. Faithful to the historical travellers route we will arrive in Imst from the north, city of springs and Shrove Tuesday, and then follow the Gurgltal cycle route south. We then join the Inn cycle route which passes through the floodplain landscapes and quiet communities until arrival in Landeck.

Day 4: Nauders – Landeck (approx. 43 km)

Start your day with an ancient breakfast: spelt pancakes with eggs, honey, milk and fruit. The „Via Claudia Huckepack“ will take you from the train station of Landeck to Nauders or Pfunds, which is the starting point of your next bike tour. Along the road you’ll see the middle age castles of Sigmundsried and of Landeck. At Fließ, which is a beautiful town shortly before Landeck, you’ll get to see an archaeological museum and an information center of documentation about „Via Claudia Augusta“.
